The trattorias in Naples

Naples is famous for its pizza. The perfect meal for few bucks. But, if you want to taste something different but cheap at the same time, my suggestion is to choose one of the several Trattorie of the city.  

Trattoria da Nennella


Eating at Nennella in the Spanish neighborhood it’s like eating at a friend’s house. With just few euros you can taste the traditional meal of the Mediterranean cuisine, made every day with fresh fish.

Pasta and potatoes with provola cheese, pasta and chickpeas, endives and beans soup, spaghetti with olives and capers, tomato fillet, potatoes gateaux, are some must-try dishes!

Osteria della Mattonella (Via Giovanni Nicotera, 13)

The Genovese pasta made by the chef Antonietta is very popular in town. She prepares it just twice a week with a lot of tears while cutting the onions. In my opinion though, you will cry after you have tried it.

The restaurant was opened in the 50s and was took over from the Marangio family in the 70s. The chef’s name is Antonietta Imperatrice, born in Speranzella St, in the Spanish Quarters.

Osteria da Teresa since 1913 (Via Kerbaker, 58)

The meatballs can be prepared in different ways: fried in a white or tomatoe sauce or in a meat sauce. You can try the best ones in the Vomero neighborhood at Osteria da Teresa, a family run business owned by the Sorvino family.

There is always a line outside this little restaurant, don’t be late and don’t forget to do the “scarpetta” after you finish your meal!

Locanda Ntretella



The trattoria bears the name of Pulcinella’s girlfriend: a classical character of the famous  commedia dell'arte of the 17th-century that became an important character in Neapolitan puppetry.

The tiny restaurant is the best place where you can taste the great cuisine at less than €35.

Must try: fish risotto, Pastiera or Zuccotto.

Il Porto dei Sapori


The name of the restaurant changed several times over the years, but now everyone know the place as Don Antonio, the father of Biagio and Giovanni, the current hosts of this seaside restaurant. It is open every day from 11AM until late afternoon.

You have to try the giant grilled squid, perfectly cooked with the secret Giovanni’s blend and — rare thing, it’s even digestible.

La Campagnola (Via dei Tribunali, 47)

This Trattoria is located in Tribunali St from seventy years, in a perfect spot of the city center.

You have to try the traditional sea food recipes and recipes of the “leftovers” cuisine like the Manfredi pasta with meat sauce and ricotta. An ancient format of corrugated pasta on the edge, from the city of Manfredonia.

Totò, Eduardo e pasta e fagioli (Corso Vittorio Emanuele, 514)

Located in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, near Piazza Mazzini, this Trattoria is owned by Mario Bianchini. It’s renowned for its beautiful terrace and breathtaking view over the Gulf of Naples.

You should really try the Bucatini O’ Scarpariello. 

La Cantina di Via Sapienza (Via Sapienza, 40)

This Trattoria is one hundred years old and is located in Sapienza St, and it’s the home of the best eggplant parmesan recipe in town. Yes, because in Naples the eggplant parmesan it’s a serious deal. A meal that you can have warm or cold, as a side, a first course or with two slices of bread.

According to Raffaele Brace, expert of the Neapolitan traditions, the recipe was born in Parma, not in the southern Italy.

Trattoria Vini e Cucina dal 1913 (Via Piedigrotta, 56)

The Liguori family began with few ingredients and recipes: pasta and beans, anchovies and fried cod. During the feast of Piedigrotta (which is not celebrated anymore), Salvatore Liguori used to put a large pot of oil to fry the anchovies on the sidewalk, for which the people went crazy.

Today those anchovies are the best troughout the citys. Luisa cleans the fish daily and then fries them in traditional black pans which are difficult to find in the stores nowadays.
